Many people refer to tea flavored with aromatic spices as “chai”, an incorrect use of the word. Chai is the Hindi word for tea, and the flavoring is masala, a mixture of many spices. These flavors are steeped with black tea; then milk and sugar are added for a sweet, warm drink. Coffee houses call them chai lattes and charge high prices for them, but you can easily make them yourself.

All you need is milk, a saucepan, and Rishi’s Organic, Fair Trade Masala Chai Tea Concentrate. It is a new product from Rishi tea and it is replacing those costly trips to the coffee bar. Just pour equal parts milk and Rishi Masala Chai concentrate into the saucepan and heat, pour, and drink. The flavor is warm, sweet, and cozy, a little like taking a drink of Christmas time.

Folgers Coffee Ad from the Fifties

Advertisers like to convince us that we just cannot live without their products, whether it is true or not. Usually the commercials imply one of two things, neither of which is pleasant. For four decades now, we have been told that paper diapers are better for our papers than cloth. After all, no one could admit that using them was a great big convenience, something no “good” mother would admit.

When you approach the Firehouse Coffee Roaster and Tea Company, you can smell the coffee before you open the door. That’s because the Firehouse is a real coffee roasting establishment and they roast their coffee on the premises. Owners Dana and Karen Kern are dedicated to producing the finest freshly roasted coffee, roasting each order as it’s received. They do not stockpile any roasted coffee to lie around and become stale but instead ship immediately.

Dana and Karen founded the original Firehouse Coffee Roaster and Tea Company in Bullhead City, Arizona in 2005. They wanted to provide the best possible coffees and espressos and so learned the art and science of coffee roasting. The company is named Firehouse because Dana is a veteran captain in the Bullhead City Fire Department. They are strong believers in the value of tradition and run their roasting company accordingly.
