Recently the Journal of Nutrition published a report on a study that examined the effects of hibiscus tea on high blood pressure. The results revealed that hibiscus tea lowered high blood pressure in pre-hypertensive and mildly hypertensive subjects. In short, it was so effective that it could allow some people to reduce or stop taking their blood pressure medications.

Now the Republic of Tea, a well-known tea company in Novato, California, has developed Superflower herbal teas. Although there are five different flavors, each has at its base African hibiscus, mostly from Nigeria. African hibiscus is a rich ruby-red and imparts not only beautiful color, but also a fruity flavor to herbal teas. It’s been described by some as a sort of cranberry-citrus combination while others think it more resembles rhubarb.

The Republic of Tea Hibiscus Pineapple Lychee tea was selected for review. Overall, the tea has a full-bodied sweet/tart flavor in which the pineapple is definitely present but not overwhelming. The flavors are very well blended and the lychee lends a smooth, slightly creamy mouth-feel. The dry leaf has a warm and sunny aroma reminiscent of pineapple-filled pastry. The color of the liquid is an exquisite bright magenta with purple and rose highlights.

This herbal infusion would make a good iced tea either just poured over ice or a good base for a fruity punch. The color makes it perfect for pouring into tall glass tumblers and serving on the patio or next to the pool. However, it is also a comforting and fragrant beverage when served warm in the evening or before bed. It is caffeine free and sweetened with Stevia, so it does not keep you awake from either caffeine or sugar.

All Republic of Tea Superflower herbal teas come in recyclable tins that hold 36 teabags. In order to minimize waste and protect the environment, the teabags are all natural, unbleached, and without strings, staples, or tags. The herbal tea comes in four additional flavors including Natural Hibiscus, Hibiscus Blueberry, Hibiscus Key Lime, and Hibiscus Vanilla Apple. They each retail for $9.50 and they are available on the Republic of Tea website and at some retailers.
