Are Tea Tastings Becoming the New Wine Tastings?
The economy has a funny way of making things into a trend very quickly and while tea tastings are nothing new, they are all of a sudden becoming big business and very popular. In addition to enjoying a nice cup of coffee or tea to get my day going, I am not above having a glass of wine with dinner each night. I quickly realized that I was craving more knowledge and starting hosting and attending just about any wine tasting that I could find.
Finding someone to come in to educate us was never a problem, but there were some significant fees involved and in most cases, we were also required to buy some wine from the vendor. Not much, but one or two bottles adds to the overall price. As the economy took a turn for the worse, we all had to cut back and this seemed liked the ideal place to cut costs because it was a true luxury.
I received in interesting email the other day from a friend that used to attend tastings with me and oddly enough, it was for a FREE tasting. In my excitement, I quickly accepted only to show up with a wine glass when I needed a tea cup. My friend had talked to a local tea shop owner and asked if they would not mind giving a tea party to explain the various teas that they had in their shop. They agreed and now instead of hoisting a wine glass, we were saluting with tea cups.
While I was a little hesitant at first, I quickly got involved and realized how great of an idea this was. The local shop owner was doing this after hours and was definitely creating a buzz about the different teas that they had. After some research, tea tasting are actually very popular now and even when they do charge, the prices are very reasonable. While the luxury of fine wines may only be for special occasions now, tea tasting can be done on a regular basis for not much cost. It is surely something to consider to get those taste buds excited again on a monthly basis.
