Going to Waldo’s Coffee House in Houston, Texas is almost like taking a visit to Grandma’s house. For one thing, it literally is a white wood frame house with blue green trim. There’s a large railed wooden porch in front with cozy chairs. If it weren’t for the signs outside, you’d think you were walking into someone’s home.

The inside of the coffee house is even better than the outside. There are several rooms all filled with cozy Victorian style furniture. The sofas and chairs are well upholstered with reddish brown velvet and very comfortable. It’s easy to find a nice little nook to sit with your coffee or tea and read a book or magazine.

Waldo’s has a great study atmosphere, at least during the days. It’s reasonably quiet and the music is low key, not distracting. There are plenty of large tables with a good deal of space to layout your study materials. Waldo’s also provides free Wifi, so you can plug in your laptop and do research on the Internet.

The coffee is good, though not outstanding, but their coffee drinks are much better. The mocha Valencia has just the right balance of chocolate and orange. Their mocha frappe seems to be their biggest seller, though. They also sell a wide variety of both true and herbal teas, which you can have hot or iced. Food consists mostly of pastries, brownies, and sandwiches.

There also seems to be a very creative energy present in the atmosphere at Waldo’s Coffee House. Almost everywhere you look there seems to be some form of artwork on the wall. A collection of framed old posters from plays is arranged attractively over one the seating areas. Waldo’s also presents the works of local artists on its walls, and whose work is displayed changes from time to time.

Waldo’s presents local entertainment on Thursday and Friday nights for those who want to stick around. Thursday is open mike night, during which you might listen to local comics or singers. Friday night they present local musicians who play a wide variety of music. It’s B.Y.O.B. because they can’t sell liquor in that part of Houston, but there is a $5 cover charge per person.

Waldo’s Coffee House is located in the Heights area of Houston. The address is 1030 Heights Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77008, phone (713)869-0700. Their hours are 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Friday. Weekends they open at 8:00 a.m. and close at 11:00 p.m. Saturday and 8:00p.m.Sunday
