Tully’s Coffee, like Starbucks, is based in Seattle and is apparently their strong competitor. Although they have their own coffee stores, they don’t have nearly as many as Starbucks does. However, they produce a line of coffees that customers can purchase online or in grocery stores. Tully’s coffee products include bagged whole bean or ground coffee and K-cups, which are designed for the Keurig coffeemaker.

The Tully’s Columbian coffee is a new product at one local grocery store, which only had the ground coffee available. The packaging consisted of the standard 12-ounce plastic coffee bag with a bendable plastic resealing strip. The labeling states that the coffee is ground, but it doesn’t say what specific grind it is. The place for the suggested brewing method is blank.

The grind turned out to be medium coarse, about the consistency of coarse sand. The best way to describe the fragrance is somewhat earthy but with a definitely cooked smell. It was reminiscent of the scent of firewood before it actually caught fire. The color was a shade of brown similar to dark chocolate, but a bit lighter which would indicate a light roast.

The coffee was brewed by the manual drip method in a single cup coffee cone using approximately three level tablespoons of coffee grounds. Eight ounces of fresh spring water were heated to a boil then cooled to 200 degrees. The grounds were bloomed with a small amount of water then the rest of the water poured over the grounds. The cone was allowed to drain completely before being removed from the cup.

The fragrance of the brewed cup was more floral and less earthy than the dry grounds, though a trace of earthiness remained. The flavor of the brew was bright, clean, with a sharp finish, characteristic of high acid coffee. The taste was mellow, gentle, yet warm and full without bitterness or harshness. It’s full-bodied enough to drink with or without milk, but better without milk or sweetener.

This is a good coffee for people who enjoy the flavor of coffee without the harshness of some of the bolder blends. It’s good for any time of the day one would want to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee for enjoyment. Brew with filtered or spring water since tap water would drown the more delicate flavors of this coffee. This coffee is not recommended for making iced coffee or other drinks that require diluting it.
