Review of Allegro Rwanda Karaba coffee
Many coffee companies these days have become both socially and environmentally conscious. In the spirit of Earth Day, it is only fitting to mention Allegro Coffee. Though they are only one of the coffee companies practicing sustainable growing and harvesting, they are a good example. More of the larger coffee companies could easily emulate their practices, which would benefit both the environment and farmers.
Sustainability is a key term in any business that creates its products from anything that grows in the earth. There are two very good reasons that sustainability is a critical factor in such businesses. The first is simple self-preservation, depleting the source of their products would put them out of business. The second is that depleting the source of their products is bad for the environment and community farms it.
Allegro coffee only collaborates with coffee growers that have the same commitment to environmentally friendly practices that they do. These farmers use both sustainable and traditional methods of processing and harvesting the coffee they grow. They do not use pesticides on their crops and they use only manual weeding. In addition to this, they use shade trees and practice other means of water conservation.
Because Allegro believes in a healthy planet, they have made other commitments as well. In 2004, they decided to plant five trees in their coffee-growing areas for every tree worth of paper they used. In Central America, they have installed fuel-efficient stoves in the community of their coffee growers. This not only reduces the need to burn wood, it also makes the air in the community cleaner.
Allegro Coffee’s good business practices cannot be seen better than in the efforts in Rwanda. The Koakaka Cooperative, near the village of Karaba, produces coffee for Allegro’s Rwanda Karaba coffee. Allegro engages in fair trade with the growers, as it does with all the coffee farmers they cooperate with. However, they have also donated $10,000 to Koakaka Cooperative for raw materials and technical support.
Allegro Coffee is now a part of Whole Foods Market, a retailer that emphasizes the sale of natural products. The deli section of Whole Foods has a small coffee counter with Allegro Rwanda Karaba coffee for sale. It is a medium roast with a nice acidity, crisp without being bitter, slightly sweet, with a smooth finish. It is well worth buying a cup to try it out because it has good flavor and is thoroughly enjoyable.
