Is Coffee Boost just an Illusion?
There was a study recently that says coffee boost is just all in your mind. The news came from the University of Bristol, UK. The researchers said that the stimulating effects of caffeine is just an illusion. Before you get disappointed and protest that this is not true, let's find out how this interesting topic came out to be.
The study involved volunteers who went "cold turkey" before they were given a caffeine or placebo capsule that contains corn flour. Their responses were tested and there was only a small difference between the caffeine and placebo group when it comes to being alert. Half of the volunteers were not really coffee drinkers and half are high consumers. Before and after their drink, the levels of anxiety, alertness and headache were recorded. Computer tasks were also given to them and that involves memory testing, vigilance and attentiveness.
There was an increase in headache and decrease in alertness for those who took the placebo caffeine - this is for the high caffeine consumers. Their level of alertness after having caffeine were not higher than the low coffee consumers who had the placebo. This means that caffeine only brings coffee drinkers back to normal state. In addition to that, people with the gene that is linked to anxiety consumes more coffee and that tends to bring about the "pleasant feeling" that the coffee brings.
They also say that the heavy coffee drinkers just show reverse signs of caffeine withdrawal which is fatigue. That's why they feel energized whenever they drink a cup of coffee and they feel anxious when they don't get their daily dose of caffeine. So are you convinced that coffee boost is just an illusion? Whatever the results are, it's still nice to have coffee - the smell of fresh coffee every morning, that is really something good and will surely complete the day of a coffee lover.
