Coffee May Be Best When Enjoyed as Just Coffee

There are so many variations of coffee these days that when you walk into a coffee shop, it can be a bit overwhelming to decide what you want. Whatever happened to the days of just going in to a coffee shop to get a cup of plain old coffee and walking out happy? God forbid you offer to go out and buy everyone coffee at the office because you need an ordering pad a mile long.

The days of just getting 4 coffees and bringing back a bunch of cream and sugar for everyone are long gone. The question is, why? It is almost as though it is peer pressure to buy one of those fancy coffees when you go into a shop instead of just choosing coffee in its simplest form. It has gotten to the point that people have forgotten how great this simple brew can be all on its own.

Sumatra– Okay, maybe this is not for everyone, but there are plenty of people that will jump through hoops for Organic Sumatra Reserve. This is packed with nuances that make it reminiscent of a fine wine instead of a cup of coffee. For the pleasure of a cup of fine Sumatra coffee, you better be prepared to pay a bit extra, but for true enthusiasts, it is worth every cent.

Do you even remember your first cup of coffee? I do. I was 6 years old and came downstairs on a Sunday morning to see my father drinking a cup of coffee (black, the only way the old man would have it) and reading the newspaper. As all little boys do, I idolized the old guy and wanted to be able to do anything that he did. I grabbed a cup and poured a little coffee into it and peeked into the old man’s cup to see how he was drinking it. With a smirk, he said one word, “Black.”

My dad and I had a lot of unspoken communication back in those days and this was just another one of those times. He knew what I was up to and he was going to let me take my lumps. I sat down and grabbed the comics section and emulated the old man down to the last detail. That was of course until I spit out the first sip of coffee that I had. I cannot remember a time when my father had laughed so hard. When he finally stopped long enough to take a breath, he offered to “sweeten it up a bit for me” so that I could drink it.

Dad went to the fridge and added a little bit of milk and two sugars to it, stirred it up for me and when I took my second sip, I thought that I had just discovered the greatest thing on the planet. Not only did I love the taste, but I was amazed at how dramatically a little bit of milk and sugar could change what I had originally tasted. Dad told me it was okay not to like everything exactly the way he did and every Sunday morning from that point, the moment the old man heard my feet hit the steps, the funny papers and a cup of coffee (with milk and sugar) was waiting for me at my place setting.

Sometimes, coffee is supposed to be something simple and memorable and maybe it is time that we all take a step back and enjoy it for what it was meant to be instead of one of these new concoctions that the coffee shops have dreamed up. You may ask what brought on this rush of an old time memory. Well, it was this week’s funny video as I could just see my father saying the same thing that this guy does in the video.
