A Review of the Tea House on Los Rios
For a business with the word “tea” in their name, The Tea House on Los Rios seems to have very little emphasis on tea. They seem far more interested in renting out their facility for events like weddings and showers. It’s not a place to drop in for tea with your girlfriends because you need reservations. Nor is it the right place if you’re more interested in drinking tea than you are in fancy surroundings.
The menu is more like that of a restaurant than a tearoom, offering dishes such as rosemary roasted chicken and prime rib. Traditional tea foods are available, but only as part of special teas with specific menus. The price of the special teas begins at $13.95 per child for a children’s tea consisting of peanut butter and jam sandwiches, a pot of juice or soft drink, scones with cream and preserves, and fruit.
The lowest price for adults is $15.95 per person for what is basically a traditional cream tea; tea, scones, cream, and preserves. They call their cream “early California cream,” which is somewhat similar to Devonshire or clotted cream. Their “ultimate tea” is the Victorian Tea that in addition to the standard tea faire includes soup and salad. It also includes a glass of champagne to drink while your tea brews, bringing the price to $32.95 per person.
Oddly, the beverage list has more than 30 kinds of wine and not one type of tea listed. The tea is on an entirely different page and includes 22 types of tea, eight of which are actually herbal. There is a nice selection of traditional black teas such as Earl Grey and Darjeeling. Their green teas include Japanese Sencha and Chinese gunpowder green, both of which are generally very good teas.
The Tea House on Los Rios is definitely a beautiful facility including a lovely white Victorian house and perfect garden for outdoor weddings. It’s a good place if you want to have an elegant party whether large or small. However, if all you want to do is drink tea, it’s probably not what you have in mind. It’s located at 31731 Los Rios, San Juan Capistrano, California. The phone is 949.443.3914 and reservations are recommended.
