The Mambo Tea House, might sound like a very unusual name for a place to drink tea. The name makes better sense when you realize the establishment is far from what you expect from the usual tearooms. It is a fusion of Asian, Caribbean, and Latin cultures featuring the cuisines of Cuba, Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Spain. You will find traditional Cuban and Caribbean flavors served in new ways from appetizers to desserts in this Rutherford, New Jersey restaurant.

The Mambo Teahouse has full teapot service, providing premium loose-leaf teas steeped in 2 to 3 cup pots. The tea menu definitely contains some very high quality teas such as Golden Monkey,White Peony, and Dragonwell. However, you will also find some unfamiliar varieties since they have some blends that are uniquely their own.

They carry an Earl Grey that is bergamot scented Ceylon tea, which lends a stronger tannin note to the flavor. Tea is available for all meals, but they also serve tea to go in 16-ounce containers. Earl Grey Bravo is apparently their exclusive blend and features Ceylon tea and blue flowers. All teas are brewed to order from premium loose-leaf teas in a pot that hold 2-3 cups. Teas are also brewed to go in 16-ounce containers; its most often served to accompany their remarkable foods.

Many people would not think to pair tea with Latin foods, but when you think about it, it makes sense. Tea is drunk alongside Chinese and Indian foods, both of which can be very spice at times. The Mambo Teahouse lunch and dinner menus list dishes seasoned with garlic, mustard, and chilies, flavoring present in Asian cuisine. The jasmine oolong from their tea menu makes an excellent pairing with their Flan de Coco (coconut flan). Many of their green teas are excellent with the many seafood dishes offered for lunch and dinner.

This fusion of tea and Latin cuisine reflects the intermingled cultures of the couple who own the restaurant. He is from the Caribbean and she is from Hong Kong, a union resulting in a unique experience for their guests. Even the decor reflects the union of Asian and Latin cultures, mingling colors and designs in an intriguing mélange. Cuban cigar wallpaper covers one wall, while floral paper on a bright red background covers another.
