Imagine you’re in a foreign country, away from family, friends, and all things familiar to you. Wouldn’t it be great to have the comfort of something as familiar as coffee from home? Borders Book Stores is acting to assure that thousands of Americans in military service abroad have that small comfort.

It seems to have started in Antonio, Texas. Like all Borders Book Stores, store #476 contains a Seattle’s Best coffee shop. Every Friday they would offer their customers a free medium beverage if they bought a bag of coffee beans. Several months ago, they decided to give their customers a chance to donate their bags of coffee to Soldier’s Angels, a nonprofit organization that gives aid and comfort to American service men and women deployed overseas. It turned out that many of their customers were glad to do it. Soon they were collecting at least 25 bags of donated coffee a week.

The idea seems to have caught on. Now Borders Book Stores all across the country are offering their customers a chance to donate coffee to the troops not just at the Seattle’s Best shop, but at the check out counter as well. One store in particular appears to be having astounding success with this campaign.

The Borders in Watertown, NY, reports they ship out at least 200 bags of coffee a week. Their general manager, Eileen Donovan, attributes this to the fact that they are so closely located to Fort Drum. According to Donovan, the fact that Watertown is a military community makes the residents want to be involved and give back to the troops.

If you’re also inclined to give back to the troops, all you need to do is go to your local Borders Book Store and buy a bag of coffee to donate. They’ll take care of the rest. If you aren’t familiar with Seattle’s Best coffee and don’t know how to choose a type of coffee to send, you might consider the Seattle’s Best blend. It’s their most popular blend and provides a rich, rather nutty, smoothly drinkable brew. The Columbian is also an excellent choice. As coffees go, it’s milder, less acidic, yet extremely flavorful.

Not near a Borders Book Store, but still want to send some aid and comfort to the troops deployed overseas? Just go to the Soldier’s Angels website and you’ll find many other ways to help.
